Session on: Agriculture : A deep view

Agriculture is the bread source for any country. A lot of recent developments have been made in this sector recently.Few of them includes agricultural drones, using hydroponics technique and doing vertical farming instead of the traditional one.

Agricultural drones are the drones(Unmanned Ariel Vehicle - UAV) that are applied in the farming sector so as to increase the the agricultural and cultivation production. These drones also help in monitoring the crop growth and development.Only the healthy crops can provide good yield and will help in a more sustainable food chain. With the help of advanced sensory techniques and digital imaging farmers can get a view of their crop field with perfect clarity. This is one of the recent developments in the plant science.Hydroponics is a new type of hydroculture where the plants are grown without the soil as the basic medium. Here the plants are grown in the mineral nutrient solutions which acts as a solvent for the plants to grow. This is a revolutionizing and hydroponic technique in the area of plant science. This hydroponic development focuses on the areas where soil quality is not good enough for the crops to grow. Hence in such areas the crop yield will increase as crops and plants can be grown without the soil also. This hydroponic technique has still to go a long way and needs more research in the area of plant science. The terrestrial plants are grown with their roots floating in the mineral nutrient solution or roots getting a support on an inert medium like gravel or perlite.

Session on: Plant Proteomics

Proteins are a vital part of all living beings may that be humans, animals or plants. Every form of life is made by this protein block of structure. Plant proteomics is the wide study of proteins in plants. The plant proteome is very fascinating and has been a very popular topic among the researchers. The genome sequencing of plants in this era will help in the better understanding of the the plants and will help in ensuring the food safety, food security and human health. This helps the high throughput techniques to be used and providing a means or a platform to disclose and reveal the secrets of plant genes . Analysis of the plant proteomics is done by mass spectroscopy techniques.

The analysis of plant pathogens can also be done with of plant proteomics. Identification of the functional proteins is also possible due to the approach of proteomics. One of the applications of proteomics in the agricultural field is the bioenergy crops and microalgae. The recent advancement in the plant proteomics include production of the biofuel.

Session on: Plant Signaling

Plants also communicate with each other so that they can coordinate with each other in response to change in light, dark and temperature. All these changes play an important role for plants as they guide and control the growth, flowering and fruiting for them. Plants extensively use nitric oxide and calcium for plant cell signaling. Most of the signaling is done through cell surface receptors. These cell surface receptors are enzyme linked receptors. For cell surface signaling plants extensively depends upon the transmembrane receptor i.e. serine/threonine kinases. For this kind of receptor based signaling plants have a typical extracellular ligand binding domain and a cytoplasmic domain. The most abundant of such a type is Leucine Rich Repeat(LRR) proteins which leucine rich repeats in them.

Plant growth regulators also known as plant hormones are responsible for the plant development by coordinating them . Plant hormones like ethylene, auxin, gibberellins, cytokinins and abscisic acid. They can be transported locally or they diffuse into cell walls.

Ethylene is the most important plant hormone as it helps in the fruit ripening, plant senescence. They also help in the wound healing, infections as a stress signal to the plants.

Session on: Plant Reproduction

Plant reproduction i.e. the production of new off-springs can be done both by sexual or asexual mode. In sexual reproduction the new plants are produced by the fusion of gametes while in the asexual reproduction plants are produced by the vegetative propagation, spore formation, fragmentation, budding and fission.

In sexual reproduction of plants two main fundamental processes are involved-meiosis and fertilization.Meiosis is the process in which genes are rearranged and number of chromosomes are reduced. In fertilization the complete chromosome is restored to the diploid number. It has been seen that many times plant’s male or female part is sterile. This will ultimately be a hurdle in the plant pollination process.

One of the recent study has put light on the the fact that genic male plant sterility can be due to the deficiency of the triterpene pathway. The study further revealed that the mutants due to not have a pollen coat which leads to the conditional sterility in plants.

Session on: Plant Diseases

Just like all other living beings plants also acquire and are prone to diseases which may be caused by the fungi, viruses or by bacteria. Sometimes the plants may also get prone to such environmental conditions which are not suitable for them to adapt. In such cases of extreme environmental conditions the plants tend to die eventually. Most of the plant diseases are caused by fungal or fungal like organisms. In case of bacterial plant diseases the symptoms include brown, necrotic lesions, yellow halo on leaf spot, crown gall, canker and fruit spot.Viral disease symptoms include mosaic leaf pattern, crinkled leaves, yellow leaves and stunting of the plants.

There are mostly morphological symptoms when a plant is having a disease which includes pale leaves, detectable change in color, change in the shape or function of plants as it responds to pathogens.Plants can be treated naturally also by experts or if beyond any treatment they must be thrown away on time.

Session on: Plant pathology

The scientific study of plant diseases which are caused by infectious plant pathogens is called plant pathology. The organisms which cause diseases include bacteria, fungi, virus, oomycetes, nematodes, parasites, viroids. The plant pathology is a vast area which covers the study of pathogen identification, plant disease cycles, plant disease epidemiology, plant disease resistance.

The prevention and control of pathogen infections is very important in every view particularly in terms of agriculture. Using pathogen free seeds, control of field moisture, controlled use of pesticides and fertilizers, practicing crop rotation techniques are a few of a measures to prevent plants from getting pathogen infected. Plant diseases and infections can also be identified by spectroscopy techniques, biophotonics.

Session on: Plant Tissue Culture

The tissue culture aims to grow plants from the parts where they have been cut. This is useful in the times when a plant has been injured or cut mistakingly but still it can grow from the

same site. This requires a nutrient medium for the plant to grow in such a way along with plant growth regulators- Hormones like auxin, cytokinin, giberellin etc.Plant cells, organs and tissue can grow with the help of this method but sterile conditions along with the nutrient medium. The explants required for this technique must be sterile. This is one of the most promising technique in the plant science.

 Session on: Wild Rice

A recent study conducted by the researchers of University of Minnestoa showed that how wild rice present in lakes and streams can predict their health.

The wild rice grows best in the low-sulfate regions. Due to the human activities like mining, waste discharge, industrial run-off a lot of sulfate is introduced into these waterways. This sulfate is converted into toxic sulfide in the soil where the wild rice germinates and grows. Due this introduced toxic component ;the wild rice is not able to grow.

This new research related to the wild rice is a very innovative and one of its kind parameter to check the presence of sulfate in the water body. This recent research is a very prominent one I the field of plant science as due to the sulfate the crops were getting spoiled. But now a check can be kept on the elevated levels of sulfate and thus the crop yield can be maintained thus enabling the food chain to be sustainable and balanced one.

This recent research in plant science has a promising future as it can solve one of the biggest problems faced by the ecosystem that is pollution.

Session on: Root microbiome - Drought Defense

Just as humans have gut microbiome which acts as a defense mechanism for the them, plants have also developed a root microbiome for them.

A new research and study from the University of Toronto Mississauga exhibits that microorganisms are required for the overall growth and health of plants. When plants will be in good health they can ensure a good crop yield. This will definitely help in maintaining a sustainable food chain. The development of the research in this area is a crucial one.It will help the crop plants to survive the drought conditions and will ultimately lead to the increase in the crop yield.

The root microbiome is traditionally acknowledged to transfer the signals for plant growth and development and for the nutrient uptake.

The study revealed that the bacteria especially Actinobacteria present in the root microbiome of the plants enables them to withstand the harsh drought conditions and helps the plants to grow in such conditions. The bacteria helps the plants to survive in the drought conditions.

It is undoubtedly one of the best recent researches in the plant science that enables the plants to mitigate naturally the drought conditions. It is one of the research that should be worked upon more to bring about revolutionary changes in plant science and will help the farmers in a more practical way.

Session on: Future Scope of Plant Science

With the advent of new advancements every day a lot of techniques are coming. This has affected plant science also . Apart from the traditional and conventional methods a lot of new agricultural techniques, new plant based products and new innovations have come which overall are enabling the plant science to get more advanced and updated. Few of these recent advancements are mentioned.

Vertical Farming utilizes the idea of growing plants in vertical stacked layers. The plants are grown on vertical supports or are inclined towards a media.

This modern technique of vertical farming uses indoor farming techniques and controlled conditions agricultural practices. This helps in the utilizing the space which is empty. In the plant science it has to advance more for it to become the permanent solution. This new development has a very huge advantage that it can be done in the indoors and utilizes the little space also very efficiently. Some vertical farms uses the combination of greenhouse where they can use artificial lights and metal reflectors.

Micro Irrigation System is a type of irrigation system that provides water through small devices. This can be done by spraying, sprinkling or dripping water on the crop lands. The water is offered to the plants by spraying water on the surface of the plants or directly deep into their roots. It is a very popular technique in all parts may that be arid region or a humid region because it saves water and prevents any scope of excess water being given to the plants.

Soy milk is a plant based drink obtained from the soybean plant. It is a boon for the people who are lactose intolerant Due to the lactose intolerance such people cannot get the benefits of the milk or the dairy products. Soy milk has been proved to be the best alternatives for such people. It has given a new meaning to the daily use application of the plant science in daily needs. A lot of new techniques are emerging to provide the same with more advancements in the near coming future.
