Plant Structure: Cytology, Morphology & Anatomy:

Cytology involves the study of cells, especially their structure and appearance. Plant Cytology dates were discovered for the first time by Robert Hooke who first studied the internal structure of a thin slice of cork using a microscope he improved by himself. Plant morphology or phytomorphology is the study of the physical form and external structure of plants. This is usually considered distinct from plant anatomy, which is the study of the internal structure of plants, especially at the microscopic level.

Plant Growth & Development: Epigenetics:

Plants depend on epigenetic processes for proper function. Epigenetics is ‘‘the study of changes in gene function that are mitotically and/or meiotically heritable and that do not entail a change in DNA sequence’’. Epigenetic processes examine protein interactions with DNA and its associated components, including histones and various modifications such as methylation, which alter the rate or target of transcription. Plant Genetics, Breeding, and Biotechnology:

Plants not only provide us with major food resource and flow of nutrition but are also an essential source of chemicals and other non-food products such as oils, latex, drugs, pigments, and resins. Physical appearance of plants is determined by the genetic factors being inherited from parental crops. Several genetic techniques including selection or genetic engineering are used to alter the natural transfer of genes. Most important goal of plant breeding is maintaining genetic diversity which is mainly achieved through selection and hybridization. Plant Biotechnology involves new techniques that meet the challenges including genomics, molecular-assisted selection, and transgenic crops (genetic engineering).

Plant pathology can be defined as the study of plant diseases caused by infectious organisms or pathogens and various environmental conditions. Plant Taxonomy and Systematics:

Pharming and Transgenic Plants:

Research in plant biology has contributed much to our understanding of fundamental biological processes and will factor importantly in our ability to feed a growing population.

The world trade in medicinal plants is estimated to be around US$62 billion, with the major players being the European Union at 45%, Asia 17%, and Japan 16%. Some of these medicines are also exported to the Middle East. Major destination countries are the USA, Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Germany, Italy, Nigeria, and the UAE.

Future Prospects:

Plant science research has resulted to a broad spectrum of intellectual properties involving plant varieties and novel chemically active compounds. Research in Plant Science and genomics is centralized on the cellular and genetic control of plant growth and development in model species, agricultural crops using genomics, proteomics, systems biology and advanced light microscopy. The growing human population requires nutritious food, clothes, fiber, shelter, renewable energy and also needs to approach the various issues induced by the different climate change while preserving habitats. These global challenges can be met by the fundamental understanding of plant biology and ecology and translation of this knowledge into field-based solutions. Beneficial outcomes cannot be guaranteed through scientific advances alone. Strategic planning coupled with political and societal engagement is needed to mobilize plant science community’s full potential to deliver appropriate solutions.
